This 21 Days voyage in the Makalu Barun National Park will leave every traveler speechless with the natural beauty this region holds. The trail to Makalu Base Camp is very less explored since it is regarded as a challenging trek in the Himalayas because of which it is very less crowded. The trekking experience in Barun valley is an unforgettable experience for everyone who has been there.

Makalu Base Camp Trekking 21 day's trip designed by Adventure Treks Nepal is suitable for everyone including those who are in good physical shape but don’t have prior trekking experience in the Himalayas. Makalu Base Camp Trekking is a less explored area in the eastern part of Nepal which still showcases the pure beauty of earth. There are very basic Tea Houses along the trail which allows you to go away from luxury and experience the real nature. Makalu Base Camp is a strenuous trek in the Himalayas which consists of steep uphill and downhill sections and drastic variation in Altitude. If you are willing to take on this trail we suggest you be mentally and physically prepared to take lots of stairs throughout the first part of the trail.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival to Kathmandu [1,338m]

A representative from Adventure Treks Nepal will be waiting for you outside Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu according to your flight time with a board mentioning your Name. One you meet our expert team member you will be accompanied by them to the hotel and help you with check in procedures. Once you have settled down, a trip briefing will be done where all your queries will be answered by a member from our Managing Team. Rest of the day is at leisure and you may explore around Thamel or visit some of the World Heritage Sites. We can arrange these tours for you upon your request.

Day 2: Cultural Tour in Kathmandu (1,330m)

With the intention of introducing Nepal's rich history and cultural display Adventure Treks Nepal has planned this day with Cultural Tour of three of the World Heritage Sites and important religious sites. Breakfast will be served at the Hotel after which we proceed towards the ancient palace of Bhaktapur now commonly known as Bhaktapur Durbar Square. This 15 km drive from Kathmandu will take you away from the main city and onto the old settlement inhabited by the Newar community where you can still see the palace from 17th century. Our professional tour guide will accompany you as you wander into the surrounding area while he explains each and every tiny detail about this artistic town. The second half of the day consists of a visit to two religious pilgrimage sites for Hindu and Buddhist religion. Pashupatinath temple, a Hindu shrine is the most important Shiva temple in the world where during your visit you will see many burning bodies as a part of Hindu cremation process and you get the opportunity to learn about many rituals that people follow in Nepal. Bouddhanath Stupa, the biggest stupa of South Asia is the last destination for Today. This Stupa is believed to hold remains of Buddha and is a holy place for people following Buddhism. After completing all three destinations you will be dropped at your hotel for refreshment and free time.

Day 3: Fly to Tumlingtar and Drive to Num

Our day begins with an exciting flight to Tumlingtar situated east of Kathmandu Valley. In Tumlingtar, our jeep will be waiting and we shall begin our drive towards Num Bazzar. Depending on the time your guide will stop for a quick lunch along the drive. The drive to Num is mostly off road but has outstanding views of surrounding mountains.

Day 4: Trek to Seduwa

Finally we will be beginning our trek on this day. We begin our trek with a steep descent towards Arun River that flows fearlessly between Seduwa and Num. The stone paved downhill trail gradually descends towards the river and we enter some local villages. This descent will take approximately 1 hour to 1 hr 30 min from where we will cross a suspension bridge. Immediately after crossing the Suspension bridge the trail ascends all the way to Seduwa. you will interact with local people and see local settlements during this uphill hike as well.

Day 5: Trek to Tashigaon

Today's day will be a lot easier than yesterday as the trail is relatively flat and climbs gradually towards Tashigaon via Chyakse Danda. We will be walking through the last few villages of the region before reaching Tashigaon. During the hike today you will encounter many local people and you will also be able to see some of the things from their daily life. Tashigaon is the last village in Makalu Barun Trail.

Day 6: Trek to Khongma Danda

Another tough day on the trail is ahead of you today. The trail continuously climbs steeply up with very few flat sections. After leaving Tashigaon you will encounter a landslide where we suggest you be extra careful. After passing the landslide we will enter dense forest and after 3 hours of hiking we emerge at a place called Dadha Kharka, your Lunch spot for the day. The trail after Lunch is pretty much similar as we continue to climb up on the stone steps.It will take another 3 hours to reach Khongma Danda. A challenging day will be rewarded by an amazing night sky with dazzling stars from Khongma Danda.

Day 7: Acclimatization in Khongma Danda.

Since we have already crossed above 3,500 meters it is very important to spend an extra day to acclimatize your body. Today you have an option to relax in the tea house or hike for a few hours to a view point from where you can catch magnificent views of Makalu, Chemlang, Nepau, Kanchanjunga and more.

Day 8: Trek to Dobate via Shipton La Pass and Keke La Pass

After a good rest day in Khogma Danda we will proceed towards Dobate on this day. This day is one of the highlight days of the trip as you will be crossing two passes on a single day with a time span of two hours. The train begins to ascend towards the mighty Shipton La Pass, also known as Thulo Danda by locals. You will come across a small pond before reaching the Shipton La Pass. After Shipton La, the trail goes downhill towards Thulo / Kalo Pokhari, a religious pond of the area.As we proceed further, the trail again starts to climb upward to Keke La Pass, our second pass of the day. Rest of the trail is steep downhill all the way to Dobate.

Day 9: Trek to Yangle Kharka

Comparatively an easy day on the trail as we begin to descend from Dobato towards Barun Valley after breakfast. The trail goes steep downhill on the stone made stairs all the way to meet Barun River. After reaching the Barun Valley we then head north following the river. The scenery changes drastically as we enter the hidden paradise. Before reaching Pemathang, trekkers need to cross a landslide section which requires extra focus.The landslide section is almost an hour long. The trail after Pemathang is gradual and takes around 2 hours to reach Yangle Kharka.

Day 10: Trek to Langmale Kharka

Today's walk will be worth every hardship you have been through on the trail. Surrounded by giants of the region you wake up with an amazing sunrise and the white giants shining brightly. After breakfast in Yangle Kharka, we began our trek. The trail today climbs gradually up with wonderful vistas of the mountains. You can easily make it up to Langmale Kharka for lunch or can stop at Tadosa. The surrounding peaks tower magically during the hike today. The views will be just amazing today.

Day 11: Trek to Makalu Base Camp

The day finally we will reach Makalu Base Camp. A day filled with extraordinary mountain views with dry terrain. The trail begins to climb gradually up towards Shershong from Langmale. In between, you can hike to see Glacier Lake and spend a few minutes with the view of the Lake. The terrain today in some sections is rough and rocky. After Shershong we proceed further up towards Makalu Base Camp which takes 2 hours on average.

Day 12: Exploration around Makalu Base Camp

Today's plan will be to walk around Makalu Base Camp and explore the region more. There are plenty of options to do around base camp. A short hike to see the Barun Glacier Lake as Mount Makalu reflects on the water is an easy option. We suggest you climb North East Ridge from Makalu Base Camp from where you will have a marvelous view of Mt. Everest, Lhotse and Lhotse Shar.

Day 13: Trek to Yangle Kharka

We begin to retrace back towards Num and will be taking the same trail. You will be walking mostly downhill today but the views will overcome all the hard feelings. Mt. Nepau magically towers in front of us as we head towards Langmale, our lunch spot for the day. From Langmale another 4 hours of descent approximately towards Yangle Kharka.

Day 14: Trek to Dobate

After spending almost a week in remote Barun Valley, on this day we will finally bid our farewell to the Barun River. This is not a long day but an adventurous day as we will be crossing the landslide section today. After the landslide section the trail begins to climb steep up all the way to Dobate. Upon reaching Dobate get your body well rested for the two might passes tomorrow.

Day 15: Trek to Khongma Danda via Shipton La and Keke La Pass

We begin our day early in the morning and begin our climb towards Keke La Pass. From Dobate it will take more than an hour to reach Keke La Pass. As we climb higher the giants of this region appear magically in front of us leaving us with wonderful views. After Keke La, a short descent to Kalo Pokhari (a sacred pond) is followed by another uphill to Shipton La Pass. The trail then descends all the way to Khongma Danda.

Day 16: Trek to Seduwa

As soon as we leave Khongma Danda we enter a dense forest and begin our downhill towards Tashigaon via Danda Kharka. The trail is all stone stairs all the way to Danda Kharka from Khongma Danda except some flat sections. The trail from Danda Kharka to Tashigaon is pretty much similar as we will continue to descend. Tashigaon will be your lunch spot for the day. The trail from Tashigaon to Seduwa becomes more lively and flat. You will encounter many local peoples along the trail as we reach Seduwa for our night stay.

Day 17: Trek to Num

This will be your final day of the trek and also the day you check out from Makalu Barun National Park. Breakfast will be served in the Tea house in seduwa. After a good breakfast we begin to descend towards Arun River. This will be a long descent on stone steps but will also be a good experience as there are many local villages and houses along the trail. After reaching the bottom of the hill to cross Arun River, one last uphill awaits us before we appear at Num Bazzar.

Day 18: Drive to Tumlingtar

Today is a relaxing day for you. After two weeks of trekking in the Makalu region on this day we will be heading back towards the capital. You can have an easy morning today as we will just be driving to Tumlingtar. Along the way there are few towns which you may explore during the drive. The road is off road until Khadbari from Num. After Khadbari it is a proper black topped road to Tumlingtar.

Day 19: Fly to Kathmandu

Depending on the flight time you will move to the airport accompanied by your guide. Upon reaching Kathmandu you will be transferred to your hotel where a representative from Adventure Treks Nepal will be waiting for you. Rest of the day is at leisure.

Day 20: Free Day in Kathmandu

A complete rest day for you to do your shopping or explore the cultural heritage of Kathmandu Valley. Walk around the streets of Thamel where you will find all kinds of shops where you may find gifts for your loved ones.

Day 21: Fly back home

A representative from Adventure Treks Nepal will drop you to the airport. Return back home with the memories for lifetime.
